The Lakota Nation Invitational, a high school holiday sports classic, celebrated it’s 38th anniversary this past weekend in Rapid City, South Dakota. Brian Brewer originated the event so Oglala Lakota basketball players could find games after the violence of the American Indian Movement in 1976. Brian, the recent, former tribal chairman, from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, is pleased with the growth and reconciliation, the event now represents.
The forth of ten performances concluded last night at the super bowl of pro rodeo, the 56th Annual Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Thomas and Mack Arena was sold out for the 284th performance in a row since the WNFR moved to Las Vegas 30 years ago. Indian contestants are doing well, as we cover the success of Navajo’s Cassidy Dennison, Erich Rogers, Aaron Tsiniginie; Blackfeet, Dustin Bird and Cherokee Cowboy Justin McDaniel. We visited with Tim O’Connell after his win in the Bareback bronc Riding.
